Expanding vocabulary is perhaps important to learn new things, but I believe that sense about function words is more vital than learning many words. For example, “It’s important to stick to referential transparency in Functional Programming because we should avoid causing side effects” is a sentence for programmers who dedicate themselves to so-called Functional Programming. This sentence is not easy even for native English speakers. Still, they can grasp word relationships enough even though they have never heard of these technical terms because the meaning of the sentence “We focus on X in Y because we want to avoid Z” has not been lost. I envy people who have that kind of ability.
